The Ultimate Treasure Hunt:
A Soul-Winning Game with Signs, Wonders, and Miracles

“One primary purpose of miracles is to bear witness that our message is from God and that God is confirming that message.”

Biblical References

“As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give” (Matthew 10:7-8).

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18-19).

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it” (John 14:12-14).

Introduction

My wife and I lead an international small group that meets online through Free Chapel. We have members from all over the world who have two special things in common: Jesus and Jentezen. Recently, we experienced a surge in physical healing miracles and deliverance testimonies. I’m excited to share what we have been learning, what made the difference, and how your church or small group can become even more effective for the Kingdom of Heaven through a few simple Biblical steps.

Signs, wonders, and miracles abound in the mission field, but are much less common in the church. The modern church has done a magnificent job in answering the following Biblical questions: who, what, when, where, and why. However, it is only when we can answer the question “how” that we become effective in doing the works of Jesus. Once we cross this threshold, we move from theory to reality, and from praying in hope to praying in faith. Here is the difference: Praying in hope says “Jesus, please heal them.” Praying in faith says, “Be healed, in Jesus’ name.”

Growing up in the charismatic, evangelical church, I have witnessed many miracle-healing services, often drawing massive crowds of both desperate people and spectators alike. In all those years, however, I have never witnessed a healing evangelist instruct a congregation on how to do those same miracles outside of the scheduled meeting. For some miracle workers, this lack of instruction may be an oversight. For others, perhaps it is for job security.

Regardless of the reason, this type of ministry often remains incomplete, leaving many people with the misconception that healing power is only endowed to and for a select few. The truth is that anyone can do the miraculous works of Jesus. Even a backslidden Christian has authority over the devil. Here is the proof. Jesus said, “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” (Matthew 7:22-23). If many, who do not know God, can perform miracles in His name, how much more effective and powerful would a ministry be through those who have an relationship with Him? This verse was the final piece of evidence that eliminated all of my excuses for not stepping out in faith and boldness.

I think it is important to mention that I do not think of myself as more special than anyone else. Anyone can do the works of Jesus. The thing that made the difference in my life is that I started hanging out with people who were actually doing the miraculous works of Jesus, and then I started stepping over the “chicken line” one assignment at a time.

The author Joel Crumpton explains it so simply when he writes, “Since it is not in your power to perform the miracles, that means that the only thing you need is faith to act and speak boldly and a willingness to take a risk to see the Kingdom of God manifested.”

Foundational Truths to Consider

It is always God’s will for people to receive healing. How can we be certain? Because Jesus said, “Heal the sick” (Matthew 10:7). Unfortunately, many well-meaning Christians are under a false assumption that it is sometimes God’s will for certain people to remain sick, diseased, or even die of cancer. Sometimes, God will allow His children to endure a season of suffering, but only so that we can learn how to overcome by the power of the blood of the Lamb and the Word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11). After all, Jesus learned obedience by the things which He suffered (Hebrews 5:8). The point is that after you have suffered a while, God Himself will perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you (1 Peter 5:10). So, recognize that suffering is a refining fire, not the finished work.

Jesus healed every single person who asked Him for healing, without exception.
Sometimes, however, there was a test of faith involved. Jesus said, “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them” (Mark 11:24). The emphasis of this promise is to ask and believe.

For believers, God is not the source of sickness. The enemy uses sickness to steal our potential to do good things in life. Jesus wants to heal you. The question is whether you believe that, and if you are willing to follow His Biblical instructions for receiving healing (James 5:14-16). It is important to note that unrepentance can lead to God allowing sickness (Revelation 2:21-22).

How to Play “The Ultimate Treasure Hunt”
Inspired by You Can Do the Works of Jesus

PART 1: Preparation
Step 1. Each player takes an index card and lists five categories of clues they want to receive from the Holy Spirit. The categories include the following:

  1. Location
  2. Name
  3. Appearance
  4. Need
  5. Unusual Identifier

Step 2. Each player prays and asks the Holy Spirit to reveal the five clues about the person to whom they will minister that day. Listen and write down the clues revealed by the Holy Spirit.

Step 3. Go with boldness and respond as the Holy Spirit leads.

Note: Do not be surprised if your plans are delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, including traffic. The Holy Spirit and angels are at work, orchestrating your time and circumstances to help you fulfill your mission.

PART 2: Identifying Your Audience
Understanding to whom we minister helps determine how we minister. There are three main categories of people we will encounter in the mission field.

  • The Unbeliever – Ignorant and careless about the gospel.
  • The New Believer – Recently awakened to the concept of sin and righteousness.
  • The Backslidden Believer – Convicted of sin but living to please self instead of God.

How to Approach Each Category of People

  • The Unbeliever
    • Get their attention with signs, wonders, and miracles through the name and power of Jesus.
    • 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Acts 8:5-8
    • The power belongs to God, so what is required of the minister?
      • Faith & belief – God is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2) and He has given every believer a measure of faith (Romans 12:3). However, in order to exercise that faith, we must believe.
      • Willingness to take a risk to see the kingdom of God manifested
      • Boldness, or courage, is not the absence of fear. Courage is speaking and acting boldly even when we are afraid.
  • The New Believer
    • Understanding the importance of the law, repentance, and liberty in Christ
    • The sermon on the mount – Matthew 5:17-30
    • The invitation and ultimatum – Matthew 12:30
  • The Backslidden Believer – under the control of a self-pleasing spirit.
    • How to identify:
      • Loss of spiritual appetite
      • Loss of concern about the lost
      • Returning to “old ways”
      • Neglecting church attendance
      • Reading the Word becomes a “duty” rather than a pleasure
      • Feeling condemned
      • Seared conscience (1 Timothy 4:2)
    • How to minister (Romans 10:13)
      • Allow the Holy Spirit to bring Godly sorrow
      • Humble yourself and repent
      • Return to your fist love and be renewed
      • Do your first works again

PART 3: Delivery

  • Make the approach.
  • Show concern.
  • Find out what the person can’t do without the pain.
  • Ask permission to pray with the person.
  • Deliver the healing in Jesus’ name. Use anointing oil, if available.
  • Encourage the person to assess their healing.
  • Thank the Lord for healing the person.

Practical Application

  • Proclaim the good news.
    • Example: “I have good news for you. The Kingdom of heaven has come near you today.”
  • Declare what is going to happen.
    • Say what you desire according to the will of God.
    • “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them” (Mark 11:24).
    • Examples:
      • “If you will take my hand, I am going to pray for you and the power of God will heal you right now.
      • “I’m going to lay hands on you, and you are going to be healed.”
  • Command the healing in the name of Jesus Christ.
    • Faith is not a feeling. Faith is an action. So, even if you don’t feel like you have enough faith, act like it.
    • It is easier to act your way into believing, than believe your way into acting.
    • Command the pain to obey you, and leave.
  • Thank the Lord for healing the person.
    • “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). Transgressions are sins we commit outwardly, and iniquities are sins we commit in our hearts. For this reason, Jesus endured wounds on the outside of his body and bruises within.

Next Steps: Receiving and Sharing the Comfort of God

  • Share the gospel of salvation, whenever applicable.
  • Ask if they want to receive the Holy Spirit (and be filled with His presence and power).
  • Encourage the one who received healing to practice healing someone else in Jesus’ name.

Troubleshooting Guide

Overcoming a Crisis of Belief

What if I pray and they only receive a little healing?

  • Follow the example of Jesus: He touched the blind man’s eyes more than once for him to receive complete healing (Mark 8:22-25). Declare, “This time, you will be completely healed.”

What if you pray and they don’t get healed?

  • This is usually a result of unconfessed faults (for believers).

Believers Being Healed

James 5:14 says, “To whom much is given, much is required.” Here, James is addressing the church, which means there are additional requirements for believers to receive healing. According to scripture, these requirements include the following:

  • Call the elders of the church.
  • Anoint with oil in the name of Jesus.
  • Confess “FAULTS” for healing (James 5:16).
  • Command the opposing spirit to leave in Jesus name.

What are FAULTS?

A fault is an attitude that separates us in our heart from others. It is usually rooted in bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness, arrogance, or envy. In my experience, unconfessed faults are the primary reason that believers do not receive healing and/or deliverance. True forgiveness releases the other person from the debt that you believe they owe you. I have witnessed people instantaneously healed and delivered the moment they applied this principle of forgiveness.

Personal Testimony

During the last two semesters, while serving at Free Chapel, I have witnessed over 20 physical healing miracles, both in person and through video conference. Here is one testimony about a healing miracle that the Lord used me to deliver in person.

Within days of graduating from a discipleship program, my brother-in-law sustained a severe knee injury, which prevented him from walking without a cast. His doctor said he would need surgery. However, instead of accepting the doctor’s report, he asked the family for prayer. Asking is the first step in receiving from the Lord. “We have not because we ask not” (James 4:2-3). It takes humility to ask, and God is attracted to humility (James 4:6, James 4:10, Luke 14:11, Romans 12:3, 2 Chronicles 7:14, Proverbs 11:2)

My family and I prayed over him, and I followed Jesus’ instructions. I said, “I have good news for you! The kingdom of heaven has come near to you! I’m going to anoint your knee with oil and God is going to completely heal you right now.” Then, I laid hands on him and commanded the healing. I could actually see and feel the swelling reduce. He stood up and walked around with much less pain, but still enough to bother him. I asked if he needed to forgive anyone. He thought about it for a moment and then replied, “Yes, I can think of someone who I need to forgive.” After he released forgiveness, we prayed for him a second time, commanding the healing in Jesus name. Immediately, he exclaimed, “Hey, I felt that!” and then stood up and took his cast off. The next day, he texted the family with pictures and reported that he was completely healed, and he even did some rock climbing with no pain.

Praise the Lord! You did it, Jesus! We just received your free gift through the power of Your shed blood, Your eternal Word, and the anointing of Your Holy Spirit. And we will be careful to give You ALL of the glory. We love you Jesus!

The Key Takeaway: Do you want to be healed? Just ask! Do you want to be used to heal someone else? Just step out in faith and do it, but be sure to follow the instructions God gave us in His Word!

Experiencing Deliverance

Physical healing and deliverance often go hand in hand. This is because the root of sickness is a spiritual condition. We have covered principles and practical Biblical steps for physical healing in your body. So, here are some principles and practical Biblical steps to experience spiritual deliverance in your mind, will, and emotions.

Benefits of Deliverance

  • You will experience supernatural physical and emotional healing.
  • Hidden roots will be exposed and eliminated.
  • Inexplicable problems will be solved.
  • Stubborn obstacles will be removed.
  • Cycles of failure and bitterness will be broken.
  • Frustration, confusion, and despair will cease.
  • Discouragement and disappointment will be overcome.
  • You will experience lasting peace and abundant life.
  • You will experience success in relationships, finances, ministry, and projects.
  • You will experience freedom from the bondages and oppressions of demons.
  • Deliverance makes the rough places smooth and the crooked places straight (Isaiah 40:4-5, Isaiah 42:16).

The word salvation means “deliverance.” Deliverance is designed to eliminate the spiritual obstacles that impede progress. Believers have the legal authority and right to enjoy the benefits of deliverance. Deliverance expels darkness and brings freedom and joy.

The devil fights against deliverance more than healing. If the root of sickness is not addressed, the enemy has a legal right to attack again through the same open door.

Deliverance is a continual sanctification process, and often takes place little by little (Deuteronomy 7:22, Exodus 23:29-30). Sanctification means to be “set apart” or “separate” from anything that separates us from communion with God (2 Corinthians 6:17, 2 Corinthians 7:1, Isaiah 52:11, Revelation 18:4). Patience in necessary to see breakthrough in yourself and others.

Spiritual deliverance cannot be forced. It is a choice, with exceptions only for individuals with mental illness and/or incapacitation.

Beware of spirits that attempt to cancel out deliverance. These include spirits of self-pity, pride, bitterness, and mockery.

Practical Application

  • Acknowledge the problem. This requires vulnerability with God (Psalm 51:17).
  • Come out of agreement with the lies of the enemy (Amos 3:3, Matthew 18:19).
  • Repent, which means to “change your mind” (Lamentations 3:40). Repentance always brings peace (Acts 3:19).
  • Confess to God for forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
  • Confess to others for healing (James 5:16).
  • Speak life and not death (Proverbs 18:21, Luke 6:45). Never claim sickness or anything else that is contrary to scripture.
  • Practice consistency in thoughts, words and actions (Galatians 6:9, James 4:7).

Weapons of Warfare (2 Corinthians 10:4-6)

  • Obedience, which is more effective and sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22, Hosea 6:6, Micah 6:6–8, Matthew 9:13, Matthew 12:7).
  • Praise and Worship (Psalm 22:3, Acts 16:22-26).
  • Prayer and Fasting (Matthew 17:20-21, Mark 9:29).
  • Reading the Word (Hosea 4:6).
  • Applying the Blood of Jesus (Leviticus 17:11, Matthew 26:28, Luke 22:20, Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:20, Hebrews 9:14, Hebrews 9:22, Hebrews 10:19, 1 John 1:7, Revelation 1:5, Revelation 12:11).
  • The Name of Jesus (Philippians 2:9-11).
  • Prophecy, or calling things that are not as though they are (Romans 4:17).
  • Binding and Loosing (Matthew 16:19, Matthew 18:18-19, Mark 3:23-27).
    • To bind means to constrain with legal authority. Through Jesus, we have legal authority to bind the works of darkness, which include sin, iniquity, perversion, sickness, disease, infirmity, death, destruction, curses, witchcraft, sorcery, divination, poverty, lack, strife, lust, pride, rebellion, fear, torment, and confusion.
    • To loose means to free from restraint. Through Jesus, we have legal authority to loose ourselves and others from curses, evil inheritances, familiar spirits, sin, guilt, shame, condemnation, control, domination, manipulation, intimidation, mind control, religious control, sickness, disease, deception, false teaching, habits, worldliness, carnality, demons, tradition, ungodly soul ties, ungodly pledges, ungodly vows, spoken words, hexes, vexes, jinxes, trauma, and cults.
    • Example: “In the name of Jesus, I bind the spirit of fear and loose the spirit of power, love and soundness of mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

Frequently Asked Questions

What about accidents and injuries?

Accidental injuries are not in the same medical category as sickness and disease. However, we can still apply the same Biblical healing principles to address any type of physical ailment. We see an example of healing an accidental injury in Acts 20:7-12, when a young man named Eutychus accidentally fell from a third story window while Paul was preaching. I encourage you to read this amazing story.

Accidental injuries are not part of God’s will for our lives (Psalm 91:12), but we can be healed from any physical condition, including death, when we follow the instructions from the Bible.

Keep in mind that some accidents and injuries are caused by our own disobedience. Regardless of the reason, we must always be open and willing to confess, repent, and receive deliverance and healing. We all need deliverance on a continual basis, and any Christian leader who suggests otherwise has allowed the spirit of pride to take up residence.

Let me use myself as an example. I had pain in one of my elbows, which was caused by an accident. I received healing, but days later the pain came back, and it hurts again. So, I have been asking the Lord to reveal to me any areas of my life that are not fully surrendered to Him. I can think of a few, especially when it comes to forgiving others and myself. Therefore, it’s time to sweep my house and heart clean again. I’m looking forward to plundering the enemy’s camp, so I bind the strongman and release forgiveness in Jesus’ name (Luke 11:21-22).

What about people born with physical defects?

We should never assume that people born with physical defects are ailed because of sin, but rather because of an opportunity for God’s glory to be revealed when that person is healed. We see an example of this in John 9:1-41, which is a miraculous story of healing and restoration, but also a warning to the spiritually blind. I encourage you to read the chapter again when you have time.

What about the sovereignty of God?

Sovereignty means to have “supreme power or authority,” but sometimes people can use this term out of Biblical context. God is all powerful, but that does not mean He can do anything. For example, God cannot lie, nor can He contradict his Word. God has given us His authority to exercise dominion over all the earth (Genesis 1:26) and His gifts and calling are irrevocable (Romans 11:29). God is sovereign, but He does not control everything because He has given us His command of stewarding the earth. He has also given us His command to “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

Sometimes, people use the “sovereignty of God” as an excuse for their unbelief, or because they have not followed His instructions for healing. Questioning whether Jesus “wants” to heal you, or that He “chooses” to heal some, but not others is double mindedness and leads to a lifestyle of emotional instability (James 1:6-8). If anyone uses the excuse that “God is sovereign” when it comes to not receiving or delivering healing, they contradict His Word, which is an insult to Jesus and His finished work at the Cross (1 Peter 2:24, Psalm 107:20, Isaiah 53:4).

People who use this excuse will sometimes be tempted to believe and even teach that “God is bigger than the Bible.” That sounds like a nice thing to say about God, right? However, it could not be any further from the truth. The Bible says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). God is His Word, and He will never deviate from it. Claiming that “God is bigger than the Bible” affords a false teacher the ability to convince people that he or she has an exclusive line of communication with God that supersedes the Bible. Such teachers, who rely on “spiritual” giftings over the written Word of God, are not ministers of the gospel, but cult leaders.

Remember, not every spiritual experience comes from God. “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14).

The danger of accepting a false teaching is that it can open our hearts to a spirit of self-righteousness (or false humility). The troubling part about that spirit, which is often clinically referred to as narcissism, is that it blinds a person to its existence, which causes a person to project his or her insecurities outward, rather than dealing with the painful, but productive process of self-examination, Godly sorrow, and repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10).

1 John 1:8-10 says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.”

Don’t Give Up

If you or a loved one are currently dealing with a sickness or disease, as a suggestion, keep your appointments with your doctors, but don’t give up on believing for and commanding your healing in Jesus’ name. Come out of agreement with any lies from the enemy. Follow the protocol from scripture and be willing to confess your faults. God has given us the authority to speak to every mountain and cast them out. He will not do for us that which He has already commanded and equipped us to do in His name. Faith without action is powerless. Keep in mind, sometimes miracles take time so that our Heavenly Father can accomplish His perfect will, not only in your life, but in the lives of those with whom you have influence. I have witnessed a real-time journey and testimony of someone who received their healing right before surgery. This confounded the surgeon and staff, who had to admit, “Only God could have done this miracle. There is no other medical explanation.” God wants to show up and show off in your situation. It’s a setup for His glory to be revealed in and through you.

Prayers for Self-Deliverance

Here are some prayers for self-deliverance from one of my favorite authors on the subject.

Here are some prayers for self-deliverance from one of my favorite authors on the subject. Every time I speak these out loud over myself, I experience breakthrough and freedom.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit

For more information about the baptism of the Holy Spirit, check out my personal testimony below.

I grew up in a Spirit-filled home and church, but it was not until more recently that I received the gift of a heavenly prayer language through the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I would like to share my experience with you in order that it might strengthen those who share the gift and encourage those who seek it. Before I begin, I would like to summarize the incomparable benefits of speaking a heavenly language as well as identify distinctions between its manifestations.
