My Prayer

Lord Jesus, You give meaning to my life, and I want to live with You in glory. Help me to follow Your instructions: “Do not be controlled by your body. Kill every desire for the wrong kind of sex. Don’t be immoral or indecent or have evil thoughts. Don’t be greedy, which is the same as worshipping idols” (Colossians 3:5, CEV).

Your Word says, “This is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Sanctify me fully, Lord, and let me be totally separated unto You so that evil will not creep into my life.

Examine my heart, Lord, and show me my heart. If the spirit of Jezebel is present in my life, I repent, and I ask for Your forgiveness. And if that evil spirit has somehow crept into my family and influenced my family members with her evil teachings, reveal that to me, and cast it out of my home. I want my love for You and my family’s love for You to be pure and holy in Your sight. I plead the blood of Jesus over my body, spirit and soul. I plead the blood of Jesus over my family, finances, and future. And I plead the blood of Jesus over my leadership and nation. In Jesus name, amen.

What's the Big Deal?

Q:

Hey Brandon – I’ll be honest I like porn… I use it for the practice… you know for my future wife… no one else knows… and doesn’t hurt anyone else. plus I have really stressful job… I figure there could be a lot worse things I do with my free time… everything in my life seems to be going great/fine at the moment… so what’s the big deal?

A:

Hello friend,

This I have learned: To that which I commit most of my time will prosper, but not everything that prospers is good. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, Satan offered to prosper Him in exchange for compromise (Luke 4:1-13). Yet, Jesus turned it all down because it would mean forfeiting His life’s calling. The definition of integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching. My question to you is this: Do you want to be a man of integrity? If you must hide it, it is wrong. Hidden sin is like planting and nourishing a bad tree. It will continue to grow and bear bad fruit, and that fruit will make you sick until you die from it. Get under grace now and save yourself from the embarrassment of a rotten fruit harvest here on earth as well as an eternity “where their worm will not die and their fire will not be quenched” (Mark 9:48). Here are some parables from Jesus on the subject.

A Tree and Its Fruit (Matthew 7:15-23)

Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’

Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!

The House on the Rock (Matthew 7:24-27).

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

Working the Word (1)

Lord, keep me from a seared conscience. Let me serve You in honesty and integrity. Like Paul, “since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience” (2 Corinthians 5:11).

Father, pornography is an insidious evil that begins with a first glance at someone immodestly dressed, and “we are tempted by our own desires that drag us off and trap us. Our desires make us sin, and when sin is finished with us, it leaves us dead” (James 1:14-15, CEV).

Lord, cause people of my nation who are addicted to the sinful allure of pornography to understand that Your Word teaches, “Can you build a fire in your lap and not burn your pants? Can you walk barefoot on hot coals and not get blisters?” (Proverbs 6:27-28, MSG). Revel the burns of pornography upon the souls of our nation, and turn us away from its wicked entrapment.

Should I Quit Cold Turkey?

Q.

I’ve been addicted to porn since I was like 12. I can’t imagine going a day without it. I’m tired of feeling guilty all the time and hiding stuff. I know it’s affecting my confidence with girls. I just don’t know how to stop. Should I just quit cold turkey?

A.

Hey bro,

Revival starts with repentance. Ask God to change your heart. Identify your triggers and replace old habits with new ones. Don’t wait until you’re sitting alone in front of the screen late at night to make a decision. Plan ahead. Set an earlier bedtime. Change your schedule. Phone a friend. Find an accountability partner. Confess the sin, like this, “Hey man, I’m struggling with porn and I need a friend I can trust to pray with me and for me.” Proclaim the promises of God. Command your body, spirit, and soul to submit to God. Take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. You got this. I believe in you.

Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Get angry at the sin. Get angry at the devil for trying to warp your mind with impure thoughts. Don’t plan on failing, but if you mess up in a weakness, get back up, take off that spirit of heaviness and replace it with a garment of praise. Do something different next time.

Working the Word

Father, remove the stain of pornography from Your church. Help us to hear the cry of Peter, who warns, “I implore you as aliens and strangers and exiles [in the world] to abstain from sensual urges (the evil desires, the passions of the flesh, your lower nature) that wage against your soul” (1 Peter 2:11, AMP).

Father, ultimately, if we continue to cling to pornographic images and thoughts, we will even be denied entrance into heaven. “Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:21).

Can I Sleep with My Girlfriend?

Q.

Brandon,

I’ve been sleeping with my girlfriend for over 2 years. We plan on getting married, so I figured it was ok. I recently started getting serious about God and I want to do the right thing. Any advice? Oh yeah, she said she will go to church with me whenever, but she doesn’t see a problem with sex since we already live together.

A.

I have a friend who recently faced the same dilemma. However, the answer is easier than you might think. You are already living as a married couple in every way except for the way that matters the most to God. Marriage has become a cultural norm often marked by societal benefits, but God authored holy matrimony. He takes pleasure in blessing those who follow His precepts (Psalm 35:27). So, why not elope? Depending on where you live, the cost of a civil wedding at your local courthouse is usually less than $100. You can always plan a formal wedding ceremony for a later date. Also, consider reading a book about how God views marriage, and read it together. Here are two books that I have read together with my wife that continue to make profound differences in our marriage:

And Then We Were One – Jentezen Franklin

Resolving Conflict in Marriage – Darrell L. Hines

If your girlfriend is not willing to follow your lead while dating, she will not follow your lead as her husband. Jesus is my first priority, my wife comes second, and then family and friends. When we prioritize anyone (or anything) above our relationship with Jesus, that person (or thing) becomes and idol. Do not disqualify yourself from the favor of the Lord. If she loves Jesus, your future wife will thank you.

Working the Word

Lord, the sins of sexual impurity will separate us from You and cause You to hide Your face from us and refuse to hear us when we pray (Isaiah 59:2).

“I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, Lord; teach me your decrees” (Psalm 119:10-12).

“I have not yet reached my goal, and I am not perfect. But Christ has taken hold of me. So I keep on running and struggling to take hold of the prize. My friends, I don’t feel that I have already arrived. But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for what is ahead. I run toward the goal, so that I can win the prize of being called to heaven. This is the prize that God offers because of what Christ Jesus has done. All of us who are mature should think in this same way. And if any of you think differently, God will make it clear to you. But we must keep going in the direction that we are now headed” (Philippians 3:10-16, CEV).
