Clothed with Power from on High
Discovering How the Holy Spirit Empowers the Armor of God
“Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
Luke 24:49
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
Ephesians 6:11
Earlier this week, I had what I can only describe as a Kingdom connection at the gym.
As I was leaving, I noticed one of the personal trainers dressed in a full suit and tie.
So I asked him, “Man, what are you all dressed up for?”
To my surprise, he sheepishly replied, “A revival.”
My eyes lit up.
I said, “Now you have to tell me more.”
He explained that he was a preacher and that there were revival meetings taking place at different churches throughout Georgia.
So I asked him what was happening at these meetings.
Were people being healed?
Were people being baptized in the Holy Spirit?
Were there miracles, signs, and wonders?
He looked at me confused and said, “Uh… no. Nothing like that.”
So I asked him another question.
“Do you believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit?”
Immediately, his posture changed.
His tone sharpened.
And he responded with the classic objection many believers have been taught:
“If someone speaks in tongues and there is no interpretation, they should not do it.”
I could tell this statement had probably shut down many conversations before.
But this time was different.
He didn’t realize I came dressed to kill.
Not dressed in pride.
Not dressed in argument.
Not dressed in debate.
Not dressed to win a theological fight.
I came clothed in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Clothed With Power From on High
Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave His disciples a command that should sober every believer who wants to do ministry in His name.
He said:
“Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
Luke 24:49
The word endued means to be clothed.
Jesus was telling His disciples, “Do not go yet. Do not preach yet. Do not attempt to fulfill the mission yet. Wait until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Think about that.
These were not unbelievers.
These were men who had walked with Jesus for years. They had heard His teaching firsthand. They had witnessed miracles. They had participated in ministry. They had seen Him crucified. They had seen Him resurrected.
And yet Jesus still told them to wait.
Why?
Because information without impartation is insufficient for Kingdom ministry.
They had doctrine.
They had Scripture.
They had eyewitness testimony.
They had personal relationship with Jesus.
But Jesus still said, “Wait until you are clothed with power.”
That should make us pause.
If the original disciples were not released to fulfill the Great Commission until they were clothed with the power of the Holy Spirit, why would we think we can accomplish the mission of Jesus through human strength, human intellect, or human charisma alone?
Information Is Not the Same as Impartation
One of the great dangers in the modern Church is that we can confuse Biblical information with spiritual transformation.
We can know the verses.
We can explain the doctrines.
We can defend our traditions.
We can attend services.
We can preach sermons.
We can lead ministries.
And still lack the power Jesus promised.
Paul warned Timothy about people who would have “a form of godliness” while denying its power.
“Having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”
2 Timothy 3:5
This does not mean every sincere believer who lacks understanding about the baptism of the Holy Spirit is rebellious or ungodly. Many love Jesus deeply. Many honor Scripture. Many are faithful, sincere, and zealous.
But zeal alone is not the same as power.
Doctrine alone is not the same as fire.
A church can be Bible-loving and still be underpowered.
A preacher can be sincere and still be under-equipped.
A believer can know about the armor of God and still not understand how to use it.
That is why this message matters.
Tongues, Order, and the Prayer Language of the Spirit
As I began talking with this preacher, I explained something many believers have never been taught clearly.
There is a difference between the public gift of tongues in a church gathering and the personal prayer language of the Spirit.
Paul teaches that when tongues are given as a public message to the congregation, there should be interpretation so the church can be edified.
“If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.”
1 Corinthians 14:27
That is Biblical order.
But the Bible also shows believers speaking in tongues when they are filled with the Holy Spirit.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Acts 2:4
In Acts 10, when the Holy Spirit fell on the household of Cornelius, the Jewish believers knew the Gentiles had received the Holy Spirit because they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.
“For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.”
Acts 10:46
In Acts 19, when Paul laid hands on certain disciples in Ephesus, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
“And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.”
Acts 19:6
Paul also describes personal prayer in the Spirit:
“For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.”
1 Corinthians 14:2
He also says:
“He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…”
1 Corinthians 14:4
And Jude tells believers:
“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit…”
Jude 20
So the question is not whether we should honor order in the public gathering.
Of course we should.
The question is whether fear of disorder has caused many believers to reject or ignore the very power Jesus promised.
Many sincere believers have only been taught 1 Corinthians 14 as a warning against disorder, but they have not been shown Acts 2, Acts 10, Acts 19, Jude 20, and Ephesians 6:18 as invitations into Spirit-empowered prayer.
The answer to misuse is not disuse.
The answer to confusion is not rejection.
The answer is Biblical understanding.
The Great Commandment Before the Great Commission
As we continued talking, I explained something even deeper.
Before we can faithfully fulfill the Great Commission, we must first be formed by the Great Commandment.
Jesus said:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Matthew 22:37–39
Then, before ascending into heaven, Jesus commanded His disciples:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…”
Matthew 28:19
The Great Commission is essential.
But the Great Commission must flow from the Great Commandment.
Why?
Because if we attempt to disciple people before being transformed by the love of God, we may disciple them into our personality, our preferences, our denomination, our fears, our striving, or the best version of themselves.
But the goal of discipleship is not self-improvement.
The goal is conformity to the image of Christ.
And what is the image of Christ?
Love.
Not human affection alone.
Not religious duty.
Not emotional enthusiasm.
Not natural kindness.
Agape love.
The love of God.
And agape love cannot be manufactured by human effort.
It must be poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
“The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
Romans 5:5
That means the Holy Spirit does not merely empower us to speak. He empowers us to love.
He does not merely give boldness. He gives Christlikeness.
He does not merely give gifts. He produces fruit.
Before Pentecost, Peter denied Jesus in fear.
After Pentecost, Peter preached Christ with boldness.
Before Pentecost, the disciples were hiding behind closed doors.
After Pentecost, they turned the world upside down.
Something happened.
They were clothed with power from on high.
The Goal Is Jesus, Not Tongues
This is important to say clearly.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not merely about tongues.
It is about Jesus.
It is about power to witness.
Boldness to obey.
Love that overcomes fear.
Intimacy with the Father.
Transformation into Christ’s image.
Supernatural partnership with Heaven.
Tongues are not the goal.
Jesus is the goal.
The Holy Spirit does not come to draw attention away from Jesus. He comes to reveal Jesus, glorify Jesus, and form Jesus in us.
Jesus said:
“He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.”
John 16:14
So when we talk about the baptism of the Holy Spirit, we are not chasing a manifestation.
We are receiving a Person.
We are receiving the Promise of the Father.
We are receiving the power Jesus said we needed.
Zeal Needs Power
Within five minutes of our conversation, this preacher’s face changed.
He was no longer defensive.
He was curious.
Then he became hungry.
He asked for my phone number so we could continue the conversation.
When I got home, I began thanking the Lord for what He had done.
And as I got quiet before Him, I heard the Holy Spirit say something I was not expecting:
“This is your audience.”
In that moment, I could see sincere churches, Bible-loving churches, faithful believers, and devoted leaders who genuinely love Jesus, but who have never been taught that the same Holy Spirit who saves, seals, sanctifies, comforts, and guides also empowers.
I saw churches burning with zeal, but lacking power.
And I saw what could happen if the fire of the Holy Spirit truly ignited there.
New Testament revival.
Transformation.
Healing.
Deliverance.
First love restored.
Families awakened.
Believers encountering Jesus in ways they never knew were possible.
Jesus did not come looking for an audience.
He came looking for disciples.
And disciples are not formed by inspiration alone. They are formed by truth, surrender, obedience, love, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…”
Acts 1:8
We do not choose our audience.
Our audience chooses us.
When you are truly filled with the Holy Spirit, you stop merely attracting crowds.
You begin attracting disciples.
The Armor of God Was Never Meant to Be Worn Without Fire
This brings us to the armor of God.
Many believers know how to quote Ephesians 6.
They know the belt of truth.
The breastplate of righteousness.
The shoes of the gospel of peace.
The shield of faith.
The helmet of salvation.
The sword of the Spirit.
But many stop reading too early.
After listing every piece of spiritual armor, Paul says this:
“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit…”
Ephesians 6:18
That is not a disconnected thought.
That is the activation of the armor.
Paul does not describe the armor and then move on to a random subject. He tells us to put on the armor and then pray in the Spirit on all occasions.
Why?
Because the armor of God is not a costume for religious spectators.
It is spiritual equipment for Spirit-filled disciples.
Without the Holy Spirit, truth becomes information without revelation.
Righteousness becomes religious performance.
Faith becomes theory.
Scripture becomes intellect.
And armor becomes costume.
But when the armor is activated by prayer in the Spirit, everything changes.
Truth becomes a belt that stabilizes you.
Righteousness becomes a breastplate that guards your heart.
Peace becomes shoes that keep you ready and steady.
Faith becomes a shield that quenches flaming arrows.
Salvation becomes a helmet that protects your mind.
The Word becomes a sword in your mouth.
And prayer in the Spirit becomes the divine communication system that teaches you when to stand, when to speak, when to wait, when to move, and how to wage war according to Heaven’s strategy.
Praying in the Spirit Releases Heavenly Strategy
The Bible says:
“For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, and in a multitude of counselors there is safety.”
Proverbs 24:6
Who gives that counsel?
The Holy Spirit.
Isaiah prophesied of the fullness of the Spirit resting upon Jesus:
“The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”
Isaiah 11:2
The Spirit of Counsel teaches us how to war.
The Spirit of Might strengthens us to endure.
The Spirit of Wisdom shows us what to do.
The Spirit of Understanding shows us why it matters.
The Spirit of Knowledge reveals what we could not know naturally.
The Spirit of the Fear of the Lord keeps us holy, humble, and surrendered.
The Spirit of the Lord rests upon us so we can carry His presence and power.
This is why praying in the Spirit matters.
Praying in the Spirit is not mindless noise.
It is not emotional hype.
It is not spiritual performance.
It is a gift by which the Holy Spirit builds us, strengthens us, aligns us, and leads us into mysteries we do not yet understand with our natural minds.
Paul said:
“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.”
1 Corinthians 14:14
Sometimes your mind does not know what to pray.
But your spirit, joined to the Holy Spirit, can pray beyond your understanding.
Paul also wrote:
“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought…”
Romans 8:26
There are times when we do not know how to pray.
There are times when the battle is bigger than our vocabulary.
There are times when our understanding is too limited, our emotions are too overwhelmed, or our perspective is too small.
But the Holy Spirit knows the heart and mind of the Father.
And when we pray in the Spirit, we are not limited to human strategy.
We are leaning into divine counsel.
Dress for the Job You Want
There is an old saying:
“Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”
Spiritually speaking, many believers are dressed for church attendance when they are called to spiritual authority.
They are dressed for observation when they are called to participation.
They are dressed for the sidelines when they are called to the battlefield.
But Jesus did not leave us as orphans.
He said:
“I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”
John 14:18
He sent the Holy Spirit.
Not so we could simply survive until heaven.
But so we could live as sons and daughters of God, filled with His love, clothed with His power, and equipped for His mission.
You were not created to wear powerless armor.
You were not created to admire the sword from a safe distance.
You were not created to sit on the sidelines cheering others on while the enemy attacks your family, your mind, your calling, your church, and your generation.
You were created to be clothed with power from on high.
An Invitation to Receive
If you have never received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, do not let fear, confusion, pride, or bad teaching keep you from the Promise of the Father.
Jesus said:
“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
Luke 11:13
The Father is not trying to trick you.
He is not trying to embarrass you.
He is not withholding Himself from hungry children.
Ask.
Seek.
Knock.
Come hungry.
Come humble.
Come surrendered.
Come believing.
And if you have already received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, stir up the gift.
Paul told Timothy:
“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you…”
2 Timothy 1:6
Do not let the fire go dormant.
Pray in the Spirit.
Build yourself up in your most holy faith.
Let the Holy Spirit teach you how to use the armor you have been given.
A Prayer to Be Clothed With Power
Father, in the name of Jesus,
I thank You for the Promise of the Holy Spirit.
I do not want to live with form and deny Your power.
I do not want to wear armor as a costume.
I want to be clothed with power from on high.
Jesus, baptize me with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Fill me with the love of God.
Fill me with boldness.
Fill me with wisdom.
Fill me with understanding.
Fill me with counsel and might.
Fill me with knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
Teach me to pray in the Spirit.
Teach me to walk in Your power without pride.
Teach me to carry Your fire with humility.
Teach me to love before I lead.
Teach me to obey before I speak.
Teach me to be a disciple before I make disciples.
Activate the armor You have given me.
Let truth stabilize me.
Let righteousness guard my heart.
Let peace guide my steps.
Let faith quench every flaming arrow.
Let salvation protect my mind.
Let the Word of God become a sword in my mouth.
And let prayer in the Spirit keep me aligned with Heaven.
I receive the Promise of the Father.
I receive power from on high.
I receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit with tongues of fire.
Holy Spirit, have Your way in me.
In Jesus’ mighty name,
Amen.
Daily Activation: Put on the Armor and Pray in the Spirit
The following declaration is a simple way to put this message into practice.
Do not only read it.
Pray it.
Speak it.
Believe it.
Live it.
The Armor of God
Ephesians 6:10–18
Today, I put on the full armor of God:
- I gird myself with the belt of truth, anchoring my life in Christ.
- I put on the breastplate of righteousness, guarding my heart with purity.
- My feet are fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace, and I walk in His will.
- I raise the shield of faith, quenching every flaming arrow of the enemy.
- I take the helmet of salvation, securing my mind in Christ.
- I wield the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
- And I pray in the Spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests.
This declaration is part of Our Daily Bread: An Interactive Prayer Guide for Groups and Individuals Seeking Spirit-Led Breakthrough. I created it to help believers build a daily rhythm of prayer, Scripture, declaration, surrender, and Spirit-led alignment with God.
Final Word
Do not settle for form without fire.
Do not settle for theology without power.
Do not settle for church attendance without transformation.
Do not merely wear the armor.
Learn to walk with the One who empowers it.
Be clothed with power.
Be filled with the Spirit.
Be dressed to kill.
